Rose frowned down at him, shifting against the edge of the control panel before moving to kneel in front of him. “Okay,” She reached up to take his hands away from his face. “Okay. So- so what happened that’s.. already happened?” She rubbed her thumbs across his knuckles, trying to catch his eye.
She had a hunch, of course. The absence of anyone on board was a huge clue. But she wouldn’t try to guess, he had to tell her.
The Doctor’s eyes widened in surprise as Rose took his hands, and it might have been comical if not for the sullenness of the rest of his expression. He hesitated a moment before turning his hands in her grasp, sliding his fingers against hers before lacing them together. The touch seemed to help, a little, and he took a deep breath.
Maybe talking about it would help.
“I couldn’t…” he said, his voice a bit stilted. “I couldn’t- save them. I tried. I tried, and I thought I had, but…”
